{"id":2011,"date":"2024-06-30T13:55:26","date_gmt":"2024-06-30T21:55:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2011"},"modified":"2025-03-02T08:02:10","modified_gmt":"2025-03-02T16:02:10","slug":"bacharach-family","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2011","title":{"rendered":"Bacharach Family"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Bacharach family was allied by numerous marriages among the leading Jewish families of the sixteenth and seventeenth century such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2034\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2034\">Oppenheim<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=594\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"594\">Teomim Franckel<\/a> families, and most of its descendants achieved distinction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the case of the descent from the Bacharach to the Reis family, the connection with the Bacharach family begins with Mendlen (Menachem) Isaac Lauchheim \u2013 Bacharach (? \u2013 1599) and his wife Edel Weissenberg. They had a son Samuel Mendel Bacharach (ca. 1548 &#8211; 1628) who married Henlen Bloch. Their daughter Edel Bacharach married Simon Wolf Oppenheim (? \u2013 1664) and they were the grandparents of the Prague Rabbi David Oppenheim (1664 \u2013 1736).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edel Weissenberg, who married Mendlen (Menachem) Isaac Lauchheim \u2013 <em>Bacharach<\/em>, was the daughter of Moses Weissenburg and <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2613\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2613\">Gutlin Boppard<\/a> (born ca.1530). Gutlin&#8217;s father was Simon (Schimon) aus Boppard KaZ, z. Kessel. His gravestone is shown below.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendel Isaac Lauchheim-Bacharach of the Knoblauch, called Mendel Jotem, died on 23 August 1599 and is buried with his wife, Edel Weissenberg. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edel was the daughter of Moses \/ Mosche Weissenberg and his wife Gutlin Boppard who was the daughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2613\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2613\">Simon (Schimon) aus Boppard KaZ, z. Kessel<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Edel&#8217;s father Mosche von Weissenberg, also held the title \u201czum Kessel.\u201d Edel is sometimes written Udel.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The beautiful and very legible gravestone (below) records that Mendel is called &#8220;Mendel Jotem&#8221; rather than &#8220;Mendel Lochem&#8221; and that he was the son of Isaac Bacharach zu Lauchheim and Brendel Bacharach aus Burgau.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Knoblauch also Knoblich is a branch of the Bacharach family who lived in Frankfurt from about 1516, and are descended from the Knoblauch family, named after the cloth and silk merchant Mannlin zum Knoblauch. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendlen Isaac Lauchheim\u2013Bacharach enjoyed great respect in the community, and for many years suffered the status of \u201cvillage ruler\u201d and was praised on his tombstone as an old man who sat on the prince&#8217;s council.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Reis family descends from Samuel Mendel Bacharach (ca. 1548 &#8211; 1628) == <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=3000\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"3000\">Henlen Bloch<\/a> (ca. 1584 &#8211; 1643). Samuel was the son of Mendlen Isaac Lauchheim-Bacharach and Edel (Weissenberg) Bacharach. The Bloch family is also a Reis ancestor family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Samuel had a brother Isaac Bacharach, zum Lindwurm, also known as: \u201cItsek Luts zum Lindwurm\u201d, \u201cJizchak Bacharach\u201d (1540 &#8211; 1635). Isaac Bacharach was the Nth great\u00a0<em>uncle\u00a0<\/em>of Moritz Reis. Isaac married Kinnel Ballin the daughter of <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2396\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2396\">Elias Moses Ballin.<\/a> The Ballin family is also a Reis ancestor family. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-columns is-layout-flex wp-container-core-columns-is-layout-8f761849 wp-block-columns-is-layout-flex\">\n<div class=\"wp-block-column is-layout-flow wp-block-column-is-layout-flow\">\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Mendlen Isaac Lauchheim-Bacharach; also known as: &#8220;Mendlin&#8221;, &#8220;Menachem ben Jizchak&#8221;, or Mendel Bacharach of the Knoblauch or Mendel \u201cJotem\u201d Bacharach. Birthdate: around 1530 at Lauchheim, Stuttgart, Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. Death: August 23, 1599, at Frankfurt am Main, Place of Burial: Battonnstra\u00dfe Jewish cemetery, Frankfurt am Main. He was the son of Jitshak zu Lauchheim, also known as Isaac Bacharach zu Lauchheim and his wife Brendel Bacharach aus Burgau. Mendlen Isaac married Edel \/ Udel Weissenberg. Their son was Samuel Mendel Bacharach (below). Edel was the daughter of Moses and Gutlin Weissenburg, zum Kessel. Sometimes Edel is written Udel. The grave shown right is of Mendlen and his wife Edel (Weissenberg) Bacharach. All being the direct ancestors of the Reis family. He was born circa 1550 at Bruchsal, Karlsruhe, Baden-W\u00fcrttemberg. Death: circa 1610 Frankfurt am Main. The daughter of Samuel and Henlen (Bloch) Bacharach, Edel Bacharach (1605 \u2013 1668), married Simon Wolf Oppenheim[er] (see <a href=\"https:\/\/reiswolfesamuel.org\/?page_id=2034\" data-type=\"page\" data-id=\"2034\">Oppenheimer family<\/a>). Death: August 14, 1687 at Frankfurt am Main. Place of Burial: Battonnstra\u00dfe Jewish cemetery, Frankfurt am Main. Immediate family: Son of Samuel Mendel Bacharach and Henlen (Bloch) Bacharach (above). Brother of Edel (Bacharach) Oppenheim. Abraham was the <em>Nth great uncle<\/em> of Moritz Reis. He was the most prominent member of the Drach family, one of the richest and most respected Frankfurt Jewish families. Isidor Kracauer, the chronicler of the Frankfurt Jews, described him as follows: \u201cHis breadth of vision, his commercial talent and ability to make best use of favorable times, his skill in handling people and issues, and not least his punctilious honesty with its absolute rejection of any unfair profit gained him the absolute confidence of high and low alike in both Jewish and Christian society. His name was highly valued on the Amsterdam and Hamburg exchanges and at the courts of many neighboring princes whose financial needs he supplied as their court factor.\u201d Drach was frequently given important commissions by the Jewish community and was elected to its highest offices as \u201cmaster builder\u201d and treasurer. He was appointed plenipotentiary on behalf of the Frankfurt Jews in important negotiations at the imperial court in Vienna. On the charts below, only his father is shown. His uncle would have been Samuel Mendel Bacharach. He would therefore have been a cousin Nth times removed of Moritz and Jonas Reis\u2019. He seems to have come from the city of Worms, but is first met with at Prague, where, in 1600, he married Eva, the granddaughter of the chief rabbi of Prague, Judah Loew ben Bezalel. He was rabbi in Turbin, Kolin (Bohemia), and in Pohrlitz (Moravia); and was subsequently called to the ministry of the very important congregation of Worms. One of the frequent riots against the Jews, instigated by the guilds, caused him to flee from the city. He died during exile, and was buried in Alsbach. Bacharach was respected for his learning and piety. He took a firm stand against the rabbis of Frankfurt, who arrogated to themselves preeminence over all the other rabbis of Germany. A few of his responsa were published by his grandson, Jair \u1e24ayyim, in the collected &#8220;\u1e24ut ha-Shani&#8221; (Frankfurt-am-Main, 1679). Bacharach was the author of an essay on the Jewish calendar, a number of apologetic works against Christianity, liturgical poems, and casuistic treatises.
